Today, from an internet where social platforms systematically demote links to outside websites, and where content recommendations are made by machines instead of by friends, it sounds naïve. It was a contrarian but intuitive enough view. It was color coded in the stats attached to every post and scored as a metric called viral lift: Social traffic was good traffic, created and validated by readers choosing to share it the rest of the traffic, from searchers and portals and the “dead” but ever-growing front page of the site, might as well have been fake. There was, early on at BuzzFeed, a thin but novel ideology at work on top of the usual folk wisdom about traffic and audiences and news and scoops. In 1762, Maria, 11, and Wolfgang, 6, traveled to Munich to play for Elector Maximilian III. That education continued as the children began performing together. She showed him that music is not only fun, but a way to communicate without words.” “Nannerl probably interpreted for Wolfgang and reinforced for Wolfgang what Leopold was trying to teach. “Nannerl was of an age where she understood and was more aware of what her father was doing,” says Noel Zahler, director of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. Wolfgang’s early musical start also had the benefit of two teachers, his father and his sister. “An early start seems to rewire the brain more dramatically,” Schlaug says. He and his colleagues have found remarkable differences between the brains of professional musicians and nonmusicians the most pronounced differences showed up in musicians who began their training before age 7. Those three years could have made a real difference in Wolfgang’s brain development, says Gottfried Schlaug, director of the Music and Neuroimaging Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. Because of Wolfgang’s apparent aptitude, Leopold soon launched his son’s music education instead of waiting until the boy was 8. ![]() “‘This minuet and trio were learned by Wolfgang in half an hour, at half-past nine at night on the 26th of January 1761, one day before his fifth birthday,’” Leopold jotted in Nannerl’s music book, according to Maynard Solomon’s Mozart: A Life. Wolfgang’s early forays into music-making took his father by surprise. “Young Wolfgang was probably impressed by that and inspired to play.” “Over time, Nannerl’s playing became more and more brilliant, her technique perfect,” Rieger says. After a few years, Wolfgang tried to play sections from Maria’s music book. She progressed quickly, with 3-year-old Wolfgang often at her side. Leopold Mozart, a court musician, began teaching Maria Anna, his first-born child, to play harpsichord when she was 8 years old. “Musicians learn by watching other musicians, by being an apprentice, formally or informally.” Being in a musical family with a musical sibling, in particular, can heighten one’s musical interest, expertise and musical drive, Jackson says. “No musicians develop their art in a vacuum,” according to Stevan Jackson, a musical sociologist and anthropologist at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. “I’m not sure there is evidence that the dynamic was in any way exceptional beyond what you might think between one relatively talented musician and one who far outshines the other.” “To answer the question of how much Nannerl influenced Wolfgang musically, I would say not at all,” says Cliff Eisen, professor of music at King’s College in London and editor of the Cambridge Mozart Encyclopedia. Such a suggestion may seem far-fetched to Mozart fans and scholars. “I’ve never really considered that possibility, and I don’t know of anyone who has before.” “That’s a very interesting question,” says Eva Rieger, retired professor of music history at the University of Bremen and author of the German-language biography Nannerl Mozart: Life of an Artist in the 1800s. But as one of Wolfgang’s earliest musical role models, does history owe her some measure of credit for his genius? The young virtuoso, nicknamed Nannerl, was quickly overshadowed by her brother, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, five years her junior. “What it all amounts to is this, that my little girl, although she is only 12 years old, is one of the most skillful players in Europe.” “My little girl plays the most difficult works which we have … with incredible precision and so excellently,” her father, Leopold, wrote in a letter in 1764. ![]() When she toured Europe as a pianist, young Maria Anna wowed audiences in Munich, Vienna, Paris, London, the Hague, Germany and Switzerland. “Virtuosic.” “A prodigy.” “Genius.” These words were written in the 1760s about Mozart-Maria Anna Mozart. ![]() ![]() ![]() It adds colors and blurring to edges in the game world and grows worse towards the edges of the screen. While it’s clearly a last-generation affair, folks who have the equipment available for 4K/120Hz operation will find a technically impressive showing here. Most of the visual effects look sharp and the game runs very smoothly on my PC. The architecture and lush landscapes of Shadow Warrior 3’s neo-feudal Japan rarely fail to impress and will be recognizable to fans of the team’s previous work in Painkiller or Bulletstorm. On one hand, you have a heavy push towards oversaturation and deep contrast that leaves lots of detail crushed in dark areas, but on the other, the game offers some of the finest environmental design I’ve seen in a while. When in the game itself with control of Lo Wang, the visual presentation is almost the textbook definition of a mixed bag. It doesn’t help that the cutscenes look different from the game color grading and contrast, further hurting the chance for immersion. These cutscenes are almost always a jarring transition from gameplay that regularly stutter and skip (likely as the game loads in the background), making it hard to clearly hear what is said or understand what is happening. The game alternates between Lo Wang’s internal conversations with returning character Orochi Zilla (who now serves as Lo Wang's spirit guide in the place of Hoji) and pre-rendered cutscenes to deliver exposition. Like the first two entries, the writing and overall story are largely forgettable, as are most of the characters. Shadow Warrior 3 picks up right after the events of the second game and kicks into high gear very quickly. Additionally, the quest system and randomly generated levels and encounters have also been dumped for a fixed-path campaign. Cooperative play, one of the defining features of Shadow Warrior 2, is now gone. Thankfully, the engine swap doesn’t result in an experience that feels drastically different from the other games, but there are several design elements and features that now remain in the past. While the previous entries used Flying Wild Hog’s Road Hog Engine, the threequel has been designed using Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Things have been mixed up for Shadow Warrior 3. ![]() ![]() For the sequel, the scope expanded to include cooperative play and some RPG-style itemization and questing. The game engine built by Flying Wild Hog was nearly perfect for balls-to-the-wall shooter action and delivered much of the experience that Doom 2016 was celebrated for a few years later. Relying more on the possibilities provided by its eastern setting and less on the misogynistic and racist leanings of its predecessor, 2013’s Shadow Warrior managed to bring the best parts into the present. Years later, the team at Flying Wild Hog, themselves veterans of high-adrenaline arena shooting classics like Painkiller and Bulletstorm, revived the Shadow Warrior brand with a stellar outing in 2013. Built on the same engine that powered Duke Nukem 3D and designed entirely around frantic action and not-so-casual racism, the game is certainly a product of its time. If I was forced to rattle off the games that I had fond memories of from childhood, the original Shadow Warrior would surely be on the shortlist. I’m no longer ready to watch or wash Wang Shadow Warrior 3 is now ready for launch on the foundation established by its fast-moving predecessors but routinely falters when asking the player to do something that doesn’t involve dismembering its oodles of stupendously inventive enemies.
